Fleece Tie Blanket Instructions

Tie Baby Blanket Directions
To get started –
- Your fleece fabric needs to be at least 40 inches or wider
For an infant/toddler blanket – use 1 to 1 1/2 yards (for each side)
For a child blanket – use 1 3/4 yards (for each side)
For an adult – use 2 yards (for each side)**The best part – these measurements are completely custom to you! I used 1 yard pieces for my newborn baby – this size fits an infant great. For bigger children, like my 3 year old, I used the 1 3/4 yard pieces.
- The two pieces of fleece should be the same size. Pieces may be the same pattern (which is what I used), two different patterns, two plain colors or a pattern on one side and a plain color on the other.
- Scissors or rotary cutter (will need cutting board for rotary cutter) Tape measure or ruler
- A 4″ x 4″ piece of paper
Tie blanket instructions:
- Take your two pieces of fleece. Put one piece on top of the other lining up the edges so they are even. (One side will be the front and the other side will be the back )
- Trim off any selvage around the edges of your fleece. ( Cut as straight as possible, but remember, these blankets are forgiving!) I like to use my rotary cutter and cutting board, but if you don’t have this, don’t worry, a sharp pair of scissors will work fine.

- Find your 4″x4″ paper and lay it on the corner of your blanket. Then cut out the corner through both layers. Do this to all four corners.

- Time to make the fringes. Cut 4 inches into both fleeces at 1″ wide. it is easiest to lay the tape measure or ruler across from the corner of the cut out from one corner to the other. The fringes don’t have to be exactly 1″, but keep them close to that.

- Proceed to cut 1″ intervals on all four sides.
- Starting on one side, start tying you knots (using one fringe from each fleece.) Tie knots on every other fringe around the entire blanket.

- Turn the whole blanket over and tie the remaining fringes into knots until your blanket is finished.

- Here’s the best part – Let you child enjoy, or give as a gift!

Thanks for the great instructions! I bought this great Halloween fleece to have my sister make my son some warm winter jammies and thought that my son would just love a “mimi” (his word for a favorite, carry all over the place blanket) out of it to match. I had no idea how to make a tied fleece blanket, but your instructions were so clear and with perfect pictures, too! It turned out perfectly and he is just in heaven! Thanks so much!

I appreciate the instructions they really helped out. I’d have to say if I’d change one thing is the adult blanket measurements I got 2 yards and it only just seems to barely fit the top of a full mattress with no excess over hang so I’d have to say 3 to 3.5 yards for an adult/ full mattress

Does anyone know how to tie a fleece blanket like tying a man’s tie? If so, would appreciate info.

Thank you soooo much!!! These were great instructions and the pictures are great visual aids… My husband and son loved their blankets!

Thanks for the easy instructions – I made a small one for a doll cradle so everything was minimized but darling! I did tie it differently by holding the cut strips together and looping them over and into a knot that looks like a man’s tie. Very cute!!

Thanks so much. Going to go now and make on of these for my daughter-in-law. She has cancer in several places in her body. Does anyone know who to make a scarf from fleece?? She has also lost her hair. Weather here in Kentucky has turned cold. God Bless, CR

Great instructions! I did all of the cutting and my 3 year old grand daughter “helped” tie her blanket. She and Dora the Explorer are cuddled up on the couch right now! This was a fast and fun rainy day project for us. Thanks!

I would like to thank you for posting the easy read instructions for the fleece tie blankets. My Brownie troop will be making these as well as doing a community blanket drive for the area homeless and I was very excited to find these. Please wish us luck, they are a great group and I look forward to trying these !!!

Wow. Thank you so much for these easy to follow directions.
I would have done it all wrong if I had not had these.
Fun times ahead. We are making these in Vacation Bible School and giving them to women’s shelters close to us.
Tahnks again.

I look forward to trying this out, but I don’t understand why the corners are cut out!?!
(maybe the reason I cannot sew…lol)

Thank you for an excellent detailed explanation and pictures
to make a fleece tie blanket. Even though I am “sewing challenged”, this appears to be something I can not mess-up!!
danielle on Tue, 21st Dec 2010 11:52 pm
this was a great explaination. I thought it was going to be a lot longer and harder. THANKS!!!
Lori on Wed, 2nd Feb 2011 6:04 pm
I followed the instructions, but my blankets bunched up to look like a giant shower cap or maybe a change pad cover, not a nice flat blanket like you have pictured in your directions. Any advice?
Noel on Wed, 23rd Feb 2011 1:35 am
Great i loved making them for gifts for many people but should i double knot them? it stays better i did it once b4 but im not sure any advice?
Lisa Beth on Tue, 8th Mar 2011 6:46 pm
Hmmm. I’m not sure as I haven’t had this happen – maybe you are tying the knots too tight?
Lisa Beth on Tue, 8th Mar 2011 6:47 pm
I always double knot
Athena on Fri, 15th Apr 2011 2:25 pm
Awesome!! I tried making one of these when my first dd was born, without any instructions might I add, and because I didn’t cut corners out, it didn’t come out so cute. So I am very excited to try this one out for both my girls!!
Lilee on Sun, 17th Apr 2011 5:26 pm
Lori, my first blanket ended up looking like that because I didn’t cut out the corners the way it shows in the picture. It’s important to do that or else you end up with the oval thing like that.
What you should do is go around the fringe area and pull it apart as far as it will go. If it rips a little, that’s ok because it’s fleece and it’s tied together, so ripping it a little won’t harm anything. Just pull it into the shape of a square/rectangle and you’ll be fine. That’s how I fixed mine. Now I have made like, 5 of these since then, and they are all really good looking blankets!

This really helped me a lot. I am making a blanket for my best friend, and one to donate to the childrens hospital. This saturday we are celebrating 2 years since my best friends brain hemorage, and it means a lot to both of us to help out the childrens hospital. SO thank you so much for the detailed instructions and pictures.

After cutting my first stip to tie (1″x4″) I put a straight pin up and down on the 2nd strip to be cut close to the raw edge, then cut that stip and place another straight pin on the next stip to be cut. This keeps all the pieces together and it is less likely you will accidentally tie two pieces next to each other as the stips are not flying all over the place, they are all pinned together. This does not take a lot of time and as I tie each knot I of course take the pins out one at a time. I wouldn’t make a blanket any other way. Just double check after the blanket is finished that you check for all pins. Also, to tie a good tight knot I take the first finger of my left hand and place it behind where I’m tying each knot and that way you can add pressure from the top and bottom of your knot. This works perfectly for me. Also, buying fabric in the summer will save you money as fleece doesn’t usually sell in the summer. Small stores have walked me back to their storeroom to pick out my fabric and I’ve saved lots of money doing this. Happy Knotting!!
Linda Welch on Tue, 6th Dec 2011 8:43 pm
this is my 2nd comment. I’ve read about corners that pucker? Mine don’t and I believe it is because I have a finger behind the knot I’m tying, tie it good and tight and then pull down on the strip away from the blanket. Works for me.

Thanks for the easy, quick directions. Some I’ve seen online make it look so cmplicated. I am helping my neighbor who is ill make one of these and she will be able to follow these instructions without any trouble.
Jamie on Fri, 9th Dec 2011 12:42 pm
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just made my very first fleece tie blanket based on your instructions and it was so easy and looks great!
Erin on Wed, 14th Dec 2011 8:39 pm
the reason that your blanket turned into a sort of giant shower cap is that you tied the knots too tightly. You want them to be snug but not super tight or they will do that.
Jennifer on Sat, 17th Dec 2011 3:09 pm
I love these instructions! They made it super easy to make blankets! I’ve made three so far! Thank you very much!!

I love these instructions its easy to follow and you provide pictures of what it should look like, and you show pictures of the supplies that you need …i have one question what is the name of your plastic ruler you have called?? And where can i find that at walmart or my local fabric store??
Hannah on Tue, 24th Jan 2012 9:50 pm
Omg it was so easy it literally took one hour! And talk about fun the coolest
Stacey on Mon, 5th Mar 2012 9:34 pm
Is it better to wash the material first?
Jalie on Tue, 3rd Apr 2012 12:07 pm
Its not neccesary to tie every other piece and then flip it over and tie the rest…. you can tie it all on one side and it looke just the same, but less hastle that way.
christine on Fri, 4th May 2012 11:55 pm
Thank you so much for such detailed instructions & photos. I wanted to make these for a benefit & was nervous about getting started. And they say they are easy. No one told me about tying every other one & turning. Thank you.
Betsy on Thu, 29th Nov 2012 8:27 pm
Where do you get the fabric to make these?
