How to make Wood Wall Letters
March 2, 2009 by Lisa Beth
During this “crafty maternity leave” I came across a sale at Hobby Lobby on all unfinished wood. I began pondering what I could make with some wood. Then I saw the letters and thought they would be really cute in my daughter’s room above her crib. Here are the step by step instructions on how to make these cute letters. The best part is, if you are a scrapbooker – you’ll have most of the materials at home already!
To start you will need:
Wood letters
Mod podge
Sponge or paint brush
Scrapbook Paper (one color or a couple different coordinating colors)
Embellishments (I used flowers, gems and buttons for my daughter’s name)
Ribbon
Thumb tacks (3 per letter)
Hammer
Exactoknife
Instructions:
Lay letters on scrapbook paper. Cut around each letter with exactoknife

Leave at least 1 inch around each letter when cutting

Paint the face of the letter with the mod podge – don’t use too much, excess will make your paper bubble.
Stick your scrapbook paper piece onto the letter, smoothing it down as you go (make sure the side you want showing is not stuck to the letter!). Let this dry for about a minute.
Use the exactoknife to cut the scrapbook paper around the edges of the wood. On the wood letters that I picked out, there was more than one edge, so cutting was a little trickier than if you picked non-decorative letters.

Use the mod podge again and paint over the entire surface of the letter. This helps the edges stick down and gives it a finished look.
Next comes the fun – embellish! Use anything that you can think of. Scrapbookers are great at coordinating embellishments with paper.

Attach the ribbon with the thumb tacks. I had to use a hammer because the wood was too hard to just push it through.

To make all the ribbons the same length, I attached the ribbon to the first letter, then lined up each consecutive letter on my craft mat like below. This was pretty effective.

Finally, I hung the letters with thumb tacks also, but you could use nails, etc.
